Fans were understandably upset upon hearing the news that Whitney Houston passed away last Saturday. So to quell that unsettling feeling inside their stomachs, many of them took to the internet to buy Whitney’s albums – something to remember her by.

However, fans were outraged to see that Sony Music raised the price of her albums mere hours after her death. Sony has apologized for the “mistake.”

Whitney’s The Ultimate Collection jumped from $7.85 to about $12.50 and The Greatest Hits also jumped in price, from $12.50 to $15.67 following her death on that Sunday.

According to a report in The Guardian, the change in price was a decision made by the record label. The price changes were only in effect on the British iTunes and were reversed later that evening after recognizing their mistake.

Despite all that Sony Music came under harsh criticism for the stunt and were accused of trying to capitalize on the death of Whitney Houston through exploitation.

Sony said in a statement:

“Whitney Houston product was mistakenly mispriced on the U.K. iTunes store on Sunday. When discovered, the mistake was immediately corrected. We apologize for any offense caused.”

Are you buying Sony’s apology?

I’m not.

To me, it sounds like a company trying to earn a few extra bucks and if it weren’t for a few observant Whitney Houston fans the prices would still be inflated.
