Andrew Celani-

The threat of rain pushed today’s Mix Lounge performance from the Roof Top Pool atop the Colonnade Hotel inside to the Huntington Ballroom, but that’s not to say it put a damper on anyone’s mood!

Up-and-comer Mat Kearney took the stage in front of the Mix crowd of 100+ a little after 2pm. He joked that he had come “All the way from the House of Blues to the Colonnade Hotel” and that now he’s “finally made it.”

This isn’t his first time performing in the Mix Lounge. In fact, he was with us a year ago right around the same time in May!

Mix was among the first stations in the country to play his breakout hit “Nothing Left To Lose” when it topped the charts 5 years ago.

Now, Mat Kearney’s back and more popular than ever before, as evidenced by our jammed phone lines with people demanding entry into today’s show!

Right away, Mat broke out into “Closer To Love” — the first single off his 3rd album, City of Black & White.

After that, he fielded some questions from the audience, Karson, Kennedy and Salt.

Mat informed us all that it wasn’t until college before he took songwriting seriously. An English major, he was a natural poem-writer but lacked experience in making music.

He practiced with two chords on guitar until he was good enough to play three. One day a friend said to him, “Hey, you’re pretty good.”

The rest is obviously history.

Mat then played “Undeniable” — a track off his second album Nothing Left to Lose.

(Notice the Boston-centric freestyle toward the end!)

A wonderful time was had by all who attended!

Special thanks to the Colonnade Hotel for hosting us and DCU for sponsoring.
