Yes, “National Catfish Day” is a thing. And some people are actually excited about it.
Confession: We are among those people. Don’t judge!
Nev Shulman and his “filmmaker friend” Max, have taken the idea of online dating to a whole new creepy level and we just can’t get enough.
The whole phenomenon started when host Nev Schulman himself was “catfished”. He is the one who coined the term catfish for online dating hoaxes. At the end of his documentary, Nev explained:
“They used to tank cod from Alaska all the way to China. They’d keep them in vats in the ship. By the time the codfish reached China, the flesh was mush and tasteless. So this guy came up with the idea that if you put these cods in these big vats, put some catfish in with them and the catfish will keep the cod agile. And there are those people who are catfish in life. And they keep you on your toes. They keep you guessing, they keep you thinking, they keep you fresh. And I thank god for the catfish because we would be droll, boring and dull if we didn’t have somebody nipping at our fin.”
SPOILER ALERT: If you haven’t watched all of the episodes on demand yet, then you may want to reverse, because we are about to reveal the top 5 most outrageous Catfish moments from MTV.
1. Rod & Ebony
Rod is supposedly a straight man who happened to fall in love with a transgender woman named Ebony. He described her as having the “same parts” as him. However, when he goes to meet Ebony, he finds out that she is in fact 100% woman. That should be awesome news for Rod, right? Nope. It turns out he isn’t so straight…
2. Bow Wow and Keyonnah
In this episode, Keyonnah thought she was dating the rapper Bow Wow. Really? The reason why she was so convinced, is because “Bow Wow” sent her $10,000. Keyonnah contacts Nev and Max to find out her online partner’s true identity. Of course, it ends up not being Bow Wow, but a female rapper named “D-Pimpin”. We think Keyonnah should have just let the cash keep flowing.
3. Sunny and Jamison
Sometimes people take their online relationships so seriously, that they screw up real relationships in the process. That’s what this girl Sunny did to her sister. Originally, her sister was dating “Jamison” online and Sunny stole him from her. Little did she know that she was doing her sister a favor, when Jamison ended up really being a high school lesbian who was on the verge of coming out of the closet.
4. Joe and Kari Ann
This one was painful to watch. We all knew Joe wasn’t dating a former Miss USA contestant, but we didn’t know he was dating one of his (now former) best friends. Not only did his friend lose the pageant, but she lost her friend in the end.
5. Mike and Caroline
Can anyone say double catfish?! Poor Mike was not only lied to about Caroline having cancer, but he was catfished by her TWICE! After revealing her identity the first time, she made up a new profile to catfish him again!
What was your favorite Catfish moment? We hope it never happens to you!
