In 1999, Christina Aguilera rubbed the music industry the right way with the lead single off of her first album, “Genie in a Bottle”.

After watching Britney Spears reign as 1999’s pop princess for a whole 8 months, fellow former Mouseketeer Christina Aguilera finally got her piece of the pie.

“Genie in a Bottle” quickly hit number one on the Billboard charts and stayed there for a solid five weeks, outlasting “…Baby One More Time”‘s two week run.

Remember back in the day when the rival pop stars actually performed together?

Man, do we feel old.

In honor of TBT, here are some Throwback Tidbits you may not have known about teen queen Christina Aguilera and her single “Genie in a Bottle”!

1. Mulan launched her recording career.

Before Aguilera scored a record deal, she was given the opportunity to record the theme song for the Disney film Mulan. The success of “Reflection” is what ended up landing her a recording contract.

2. “Genie in a Bottle” wasn’t the song’s original title.

Can you guess what the original song title was? Think about the lyrics in the chorus:

If you want to be with me
Baby there’s a price to pay
I’m a genie in a bottle
You gotta rub me the right way

If you guessed, “If You Want to Be With Me”, then you are correct!

3. A different girl group thought they could make the song a bigger hit than Christina.

The writers of the girl group Innocence thought that their girl group could make the song a bigger hit than Christina. Don’t remember Innocence? Yeah, neither do we.

4. Despite looking hot, Aguilera was actually freezing in the music video.

Shot in Malibu, California, Christina was wearing teeny tiny outfits while the crew surrounding her were wearing large winter coats. Can you tell that she’s cold in the video?

5. Wait, was that Christina performing on Beverly Hills 90210?!

Hell yeah, it was! Christina Aguilera was the entertainment at David Silver’s birthday party in the series’ season 10 episode, “Let’s Eat Cake”. Wow, what a beautiful 90’s sentence.

Those are your Throwback Tidbits for the 1999 hit, “Genie in a Bottle”! Check back next Thursday for a brand new #TBT!
