Rob Thomas had some big news this morning, not only is he working his new album, The Great Unknown and a new single, Hold On Forever, he’s also headlining this year’s MixFest concert at the DCR Hatch Memorial Shell.

It doesn’t seem to be slowing down for Rob, who tells Gregg Daniels, Fast Freddy, and Amanda Giles that he’s already working on what to do for the 20th anniversary of Matchbox Twenty.

“We’re trying to figure it out, if things go well, I’ll be in the middle of this, and we’ll just have to carve out some time to do something. If not, then I’ll have all the time in the world,” laughed Rob.

“We’re definitely going to reissue the stuff and we want to play something, maybe put something out. We’re just kind of talking about that. All the guys right now are just giving me a little bit of time to get the record out and get it started so I can give it a good chance.”

The Great Unknown comes out on Friday August 21st. Rob says it’s a little bit all over the place, from soft acoustic piano to a track that gives off a dance club in Chelsea-type vibe.

“At the end of the day,” he says. “Because I’m this kid that comes from this alternative rock background, it’s still the sound of an alternative kid trying to make a pop record.”

Rob has some help on this latest album with Ryan Tedder. “He’s amazing. OneRepublic to me is the sound of an alternative band playing some pop music,” “Obviously with him and Adele and Beyonce and U2, I mean, he’s just non-stop, that guy.”

Rob Thomas takes the stage along the Charles River with Mix 104.1 on Saturday, September 19th, 2015 in Boston.
