1993 was a great year for Mariah Carey. Well, pretty much all of the 1990’s were great for her.
By this week in 1993, Carey’s single “Dreamlover” had just hit its third week at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart.
The single went on to rule the charts for another five weeks, letting a couple other artists take over the spot temporarily, until Mariah became #1 again with “Hero” that December.
Here are some throwback tidbits you may not have known about “Dreamlover” and Mariah Carey!
1. It samples a song by The Emotions.
“Dreamlover” samples the hook of “Blind Alley” by The Emotions. Can you hear it?
2. Mariah’s dog Jack starred in the music video.
Carey’s dog Jack made a cameo in the music video for “Dreamlover”. Jack was also featured in her 2008 music video for “Bye Bye”, along with footage of other deceased family members and friends of Mariah. #RIPJack
3. The song wasn’t named until it was finished.
Like with most of Mariah’s songs, she came up with “Dreamlover”‘s instrumentation first, then its lyrics, and finally its title.
4. Mariah’s album Music Box was pop for a reason.
After Carey’s second studio album, Emotions, failed to perform as well as Columbia Records had projected, Mariah and the label came to an agreement that her next album would have more of a pop influence.
5. Mariah’s ex-husband Tommy Mottola changed the song.

Tommy had mixed feelings about the finished product, so he convinced Mariah’s producer, Walter Afanasieff, to change the way the sampled hook was used in the song. He also convinced him to add new instrumentation.
