Everyone knew that the odds for a full Spice Girls reunion were slim, but fans are having a hard time wrapping their heads around five becoming three. Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice) bowing out of the girl group made sense, but Sporty Spice not participating in the reunion never crossed fans’ minds.

Unfortunately, Mel C. has confirmed the rumors to Love Magazine. She won’t be joining Geri, Emma, and Mel B., AKA “GEM”, out on the road next year. And although she’ll be missing out on an extremely lucrative opportunity, the Spice Girl (don’t worry, she still considers herself one) has a pretty good explanation as to why she won’t be revisiting her roots.

“Look, I will be a Spice Girl until I die,” Mel C. assures fans. “But the continuous speculation on whether we will reform to celebrate 20 years of ‘Wannabe’ has been particularly exhausting. Don’t get me wrong – I totally get it. But is it a new rule that bands have to reform? Why can’t we just be remembered for our incredible achievements in the nineties.”

It’s a good question, and it doesn’t just apply to bands. Just look at what’s happening on television right now — Fuller House, Girl Meets World, The X-Files, Gilmore Girls, Arrested Development (again!), Hey Arnold!, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Twin Peaks. We are living in a nostalgia-driven world, and there’s no end in sight.

“When we embarked on the reunion tour [2007] it was amazing, scary and surreal all at the same time. The five of us back together again. Like we’d stepped back in time for a global celebration of the band,” Mel C. reflects.

“Truth be told, earlier this year after several face-to-face meetings with the girls I made the difficult decision not to be part of a proposed reunion with Emma, Geri and Melanie. Victoria had already bowed out understandably with the demands of her fashion label and her rather large family.”

“The hardest part for me was letting people down, the girls, the fans, civilisation?! Unfortunately something didn’t feel quite right and I had to follow my gut. I’d love to play huge arenas across the World, sing our brilliantly bonkers pop songs and relive our former glory. It is of course a very lucrative opportunity too. But we were a five-piece band. Didn’t we reach a peak with the Olympics? There’s a lot to be said for bowing out on a high note.”

“For me the absolute pinnacle of my Spice existence was being watched by a billion people around the globe belting out ‘Spice up Your Life’ on top of a black cab at the 2012 London Olympics. Anything less than the full line-up just didn’t feel like we’d be doing justice to the band or the fans.”

Well, there you have it. Mel C. doesn’t wannabe a part of next year’s Spice Girls reunion. But that doesn’t mean she won’t be a part of a future one. As long as all four of her bandmates agree to join forces, it sounds like Sporty Spice will be there.
