Just ten hours before Luke Pell boarded a flight to L.A. to start filming for The Bachelor, producers of the show called JoJo’s third runner up to let him know that they had decided to “go in a different direction” for the upcoming season. That direction pointed to Bachelor Nation veteran, Nick Viall.

This explains the rush on Nick’s announcement, which awkwardly gave away spoilers from the show he’s currently competing for love on, Bachelor In Paradise.

“We were all satisfied, had agreed to the contracts and everything was moving forward,” Pell told Us Weekly. “I was checked in to my flight to come to L.A. I got a call from producers Sunday night at about 10 p.m. They said ABC had decided to quote-unquote go in a different direction. I was supposed to fly out Monday morning at 9 a.m. I had my bags packed and everything. Most dramatic Monday ever!”

All the plans were set in motion for Pell to become the next Bachelor. Even his sister was on the books. “We had planned for intro filming and had planned to have my sister come on for a date and give advice as part of the show,” Pell revealed. “I met with the wardrobe guys. Everything was moving forward. Everyone on the production level was expecting it to be me, as well.”

Unlike Chad, who would lost his ever-loving mind if ABC slighted him, Luke handled the situation coolly, and said that he’s “come to accept the decision.” “From all my years in the military, I’ve learned that some things are out of my control. I put it in the past, and I’m moving forward. It was a huge surprise, but the element of surprise and unexpected decisions is what the show thrives off of.”

Pell’s Instagram comment was just as level-headed.

Although, his mom’s was slightly more emotional.

After finding out that Nick Viall was a last minute choice made by ABC, fans immediately took to to start a petition for both men to compete for the title.

“Let Luke Pell and Nick Viall both be the new Bachelor and let the 25 women choose who they want,” the petition urges. “Like Britt and Kaitlyn did.” While we’re all for Luke getting another shot at love, the military veteran has made it clear that he’s no longer interested. “I probably wouldn’t do it,” Luke admitted. “I don’t want to wait in the wings for what decisions they can make for my life. I want to head back into taking control of my own destiny.”

Good for him!
