Venice's Canal Water Looks Clearer Amid Coronavirus Lockdown

March 18, 2020

The coronavirus lockdown is having some unexpected side effects!

Italy is one of the countries hit hardest by COVID-19 and the people remain isolated in their homes. What's remarkable is that residents of Venice, Italy have begun posting photos of the canal water showing it to be more clear. With everyone inside and the stop of boat traffic the water's appearance has changed.

According to CNN, the mayor of Venice stated that boat traffic brings sediment to the top of the water -- creating the less visibile look -- but since many boats are stopped the sediment is staying at the bottom.

A Facebook group called VENEZIA PULITA (clean venice) is where many people have been sharing photos. Countless marine life have been spotted in the waters. The spread of this virus may be terrible, but the beuaty of this unexpected side effect at least is a glimmer of positivity.
