According to FOX 59, Joe served in Afghanistan from May 2012 to February 2013 with Tess, who was his bomb-sniffing partner.

When Joe's service was coming to a close, Tess was converted to a Patrol Explosive Detection Dog program, and they parted ways. He has been trying to reconnect with his old dog for five years.

Joe explained that he had been "going through an emotional rollercoaster without her" while his PTSD lingers and he is without her.

Well, Joe's dream finally came true. He and his wife filed adoption papers for Tess as soon as she was retired from her services, and they found out on January 23rd that Tess would be coming home to them.
